Rapid prototyping is essential in research and development to conduct proof of concept experiments. Conventionally this is done by using commercially available off-the-shelf opto-mechanical parts. With the advent of 3D printers, this can now be done by using 3D printed parts. 3D printing allows un-conventional designs and creates new possibilities. This tutorial provides a quick introduction to rapid prototyping. Contents include CAD modelling software types, 3D printing technologies, tips on creating models for 3D printing, introduction to OpenSCAD CAD software and printing tips for using filament deposition printers such as ultimaker 2+.
